There’s a specific kind of backyard eyesore that a hot tub becomes when it dies. It stops being a spa and turns into a 400-pound acrylic bathtub full of black rainwater, leaves, and things you don’t want to think about — too heavy to move, too awkward to break down, and definitely not something the town will take at the curb. It just sits there, lowering the vibe of an otherwise nice yard, season after season.
Getting rid of one is genuinely a demolition job disguised as a pickup, and that’s the honest reason people call us instead of wrestling it themselves. You can’t lift a hot tub. You take it apart.
A hot tub is built to never come apart. The shell is fiberglass-reinforced acrylic, molded in one rigid piece with the jet plumbing running through it. Around that is a thick jacket of rigid foam insulation, then a cabinet — cedar, or more often a synthetic composite these days — and an equipment bay holding the pump, motor, and heater. All of it is engineered to survive years of hot water and weather, which is exactly what makes it stubborn at the end. It won’t fit through a gate whole, it won’t lift onto a truck whole, and it can’t legally go out with the trash. So the job is to reverse the manufacturing: drain it, cut it into pieces, and carry it out.
The sequence is the same on nearly every above-ground spa:

We want to be clear here, because it’s a safety issue, not a sales one. Disconnecting that safely means shutting the breaker, verifying zero volts, and capping the conductors to code. That’s licensed-electrician work, and for a hardwired tub we ask that it be handled before we arrive. If yours is a 120-volt plug-and-play model, there’s nothing to arrange — you unplug it and we go. Either way, we don’t put a saw into a tub that might still be live. One quick note that surprises people: unlike a fridge or an AC unit, a hot tub has no refrigerant in it — it only heats water, so there’s no Freon step to worry about.
We’d rather tell you the truth than a feel-good version. The metal is the recyclable part: the pump, motor, heater, and the copper inside them go to scrap recycling, which is a real diversion and it helps keep the disposal side of your price down. The shell and the foam are a different story — fiberglass-reinforced acrylic and waterlogged insulation aren’t accepted in normal recycling streams, so they head to an approved disposal facility, hauled by properly registered, insured crews under New Jersey’s transporter rules. Anyone promising you a hot tub gets fully recycled is stretching it. What we can honestly promise is that we recover the metal, dispose of the rest legitimately, and keep the paperwork.
Two things mostly: size and access. A compact two- or three-person spa sitting in an open backyard with the truck nearby is the straightforward end of the scale. The number climbs with a big six-to-eight-person tub, a swim spa, a second-story or raised deck that means carrying sections down stairs, a built-in tub that requires cutting deck boards, or an in-ground shell that turns the job into concrete demolition. Long carries through narrow side yards — common on tight shore lots — add labor too. Usually yes. If it's simply resting on the deck surface, we drain, cut, and carry it down like any other spa. If it was built into the deck — framing notched around it, boards run up to the shell — getting it out may mean cutting some deck boards, and that carpentry is quoted separately so you see it clearly. Different and bigger. An in-ground spa means breaking out a concrete surround and dealing with the shell as a demolition job, not a lift-and-carry. It's absolutely doable, but it's priced as demolition — send photos and we'll tell you honestly what it involves before you commit.
The metal does. The pump, motor, heater, and control pack are metal and copper — those go to scrap recycling. We'll be straight with you about the rest: the acrylic-and-fiberglass shell and the foam insulation aren't curbside-recyclable and mostly head to approved disposal. We recover what genuinely can be recovered rather than promising a tub gets '100% recycled,' because that part isn't true of any hot tub.
As-is is how they almost always come to us. Corroded frames, cracked shells, seized pumps, a cover that's more waterlogged than foam — condition changes nothing about the removal. Shore tubs live hard lives; hauling the remains is routine work here.
